About
My name is Karen and I love to sew. I have loved sewing since the first time I used my mother’s machine (now vintage) and have worked in the sewing industry for most of my adult life. Formally and professionally, I began at a school for couture design and tailoring. This eventually led to teaching tailoring and fitting at the college level. Later, I was trained by several high-end European sewing machine companies, specializing in just about every possible aspect and feature of these machine. Currently, I enjoy teaching new and experienced sewers the full benefit and features of their new sewing machines.
Personally, I love to create and problem solve. When my daughters needed “gowns for the ball”, I became very intuitive and resourceful. They would tear out multiple pages from fashion magazines and say “I want this neckline in the front. I want the back neckline to look like this. I love how the bottom of this skirt flows. Can I have it in these colors and, of course, I know Mom that you can make it fit perfectly.” Well, so what’s a mom to do? Get to work – this masterpiece needs to be ready in two weeks. The best thing is when they go off to the ball, give you a hug, and say, “It’s perfect”. Most recently, I reconfigured a $1,200.00 wedding dress for my daughter who wanted a “convertible gown”: long and elegant for the ceremony, but short and flirtatious for the recption. You should have seen the surprise looks on the guests’ faces when she arrived to the reception in her transformed gown! What a hit!
So many people have told me that I need to write a book or something about all the “stuff” I have learned about sewing. Well, here is my first stab at sharing in a social way all that I know, and I choose to do it in a blog because I, too, am always learning and want a place for us to all keep on learning. My goal is to share with you what I have learned to make your sewing better and easier, making it your art, as well as to learn from those out there like me, who just love to create by sewing. Come along!
